2003 Golden Heart Finalists, aka The Wet Noodle Posse

My favorite time in the month of March is Golden Heart Announcement time! The Ritas are exciting too and I always try to read as many Rita finalist books as I can. I first entered the Golden Heart in 1999, I believe. I didn’t final until 2003. What a thrill that was for me! I was in the shower and I did NOT think I would be getting a call. Not in a million years…  When my husband heard the caller say she was from RWA he put her on hold and came to tell me. I jumped out of the shower to take the call. After the caller told me I finaled, I said, “No way!” at least fifty times. Last year was my first time being a DOUBLE finalist. That was exciting too! This year I didn’t think I would be getting excited…but already I find myself thinking about those calls going out. Hey, as long as I’m not published yet (because the stars have yet to align properly) I’m going to keep going for the gold and I’m going to enjoy the ride!

If anyone out there has any questions at all pertaining to the Golden Heart, let me know and I’ll be happy to help out!

The word…THAT and THEN

The word THAT:  If you go to Three Seas Literary Agency, they have some writing tips about the overuse of the word THAT. Here’s what they say:

Read, and then read again, all sentences which contain the word “that.” Many, many times “that” can be omitted, or the word “which” can be substituted. Sometimes, however, “that” is necessary and must remain in the sentence.

That not needed: I’m certain that you understand everything I’m trying to say.

Better way: I’m certain you understand everything I’m trying to say.

NOTE: Only by reading the sentence out loud and concentrating on it, will you be able to delete all unnecessary usage of the word that. HINT: Use the “find” for locating all of the times you used “that” in your manuscript.

Now for the word THEN: Am I the only writer who still has to edit out the overuse of the word “then” after the first draft is written? He untied her hands and then…  Jessica leaned back in the chair and then…  He made a left and then a right before…  Arghhh! It drives me nuts. Why do I do that? Well, at least I can edit them out.  Phew.

My 2008 RWA badge

I am still working on my first romantic thriller. I love writing, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. I struggle, I stare at a blank screen, I scribble a few words and then stop to think. I’ve been writing for over ten years now and it’s still difficult. But I can’t stop. I want to see my books on the shelves at the bookstore down the street. I won’t give up until that happens.

The Golden Heart is an unpublished contest put on by Romance Writers of America. This March, finalists will be announced. I am a six-time finalists, but have yet to win a coveted necklace. Maybe this will be the year! Better yet, maybe I will sell a book!

Keep dreaming!

Another day to enjoy life…

Happiness is jumping!

Happiness is jumping!

Yeah, I know. Some people don’t believe in the law of attraction or being positive. Some don’t like being around happy people…period. I do. I like when a stranger looks me in the eye and smiles as we pass. I believe thinking positive about the future or even about getting a parking space up front, or knowing you’re going to have a great week or year, can’t hurt. I’ve seen first hand how negative people attract negative reactions. I KNOW today is going to be a great day because every day is wonderful. Since surviving cancer, Lance Armstrong says he has great days and good days. And yes, being happy doesn’t mean that bad things don’t happen to good people. I wish it wasn’t so. I wish evil didn’t exist, that people stopped warring over land and religion. I wish people stopped judging others. Complaining doesn’t do anyone any good; it serves no purpose. I used to dwell on all the horrible things that happened in my life. I used to resent people for “ruining” my life…but then I realized the only one who could ruin my life was me. And I began to see the good in everything. I began to appreciate each day. Life is a gift. Material things do not make people happy. Happy people are happy because they like themselves and they are grateful for being alive. It’s the little things that count. Be happy!

Kids Grow Up Fast

All My Children (with Aunt Mary)

All My Children (with Aunt Mary)

I remember when my first son was born. After months of telling the doctor I did NOT under any circumstances want to have a c-section…I ended up (after pushing for nearly 10 hours) grabbing a fistful of the doctor’s shirt and telling him to take the damn baby…NOW! I ended up having four children and four c-sections.

Despite starting out colicky, my first born son, Jesse, 28, ended up being the sweetest, shyest, most easy-going kid in the world. He makes people laugh. He’s a nice guy. He’s a considerate, compassionate human being. He has ideas and solutions. He’s a deep thinker, an intellect, a hardworker. Jesse is FUNNY.

Joey is 21. He’s a kind-hearted, adventurous soul. He doesn’t take life too serious. He likes to find ways to make a quick buck. People gravitate to Joey. A partier and a lover of life, he’s fearless and fun. Joey is LIFE.

Morgan is 20. She’s determined, compassionate, trustworthy and responsible. She’s a do-er and a hardworker. She’s drama. She’s loud. She’s nice. She wears her emotions on her sleeves. Family and friends are important to her. Morgan is LOVE.

Brittany is 16. She’s a list-maker, an out-of-the box thinker and do-er. She wants to try everything and she’s good at everything she tries. She’s quiet. She is positive and optimistic. Brittany is ADVENTURE.

So far this year, Jesse has managed to keep his Brooklyn, NY company DIJIFI running in these hard economic times. Joey is leaving in a few days for a month of fun and rock climbing in Italy. Morgan moved to Los Angeles and is taking entertainment hosting classes. She landed two jobs within her first week in the City of Angels! Brittany is studying like crazy, doing her best to get good grades so she can go to Cambodia and teach english in an orphanage before starting college…

That’s all for now!

Lets Sell a Book!

Let's Sell a Book!

Last year, June 11th, 2008, I signed with Kevan Lyon of the Dijkstra Literary Agency in Del Mar, CA. A very exciting time for me. Last week, Kevan called with the news that she and Jill Marsal were leaving the agency to start the Marsal Lyon Literary Agency. I am very excited for Kevan and I’m wishing her and all the members of their new agency much success. Their team has worked with many best-selling authors and they have a great track record. I am looking forward to a long-term relationship and many future book sales for me and MLLA.

What have you done lately?

Beautiful Day!

Beautiful Day!

Today is the LAST day of February of 2009. Two months of the new year…gone! Time flies. I don’t mean to panic you, but what have you done lately?

Are you taking time for yourself? Exercising? Eating healthy?

Have you danced in the rain? Jumped out of plane? Read a couple of books?

I plan to start a vegetable garden in a few weeks. Mom is going to help me. It’ll give us something to do together. It’s never too late to make an effort to do something with mom or dad. Our parents and siblings and good friends are not going to be here forever. And neither are we. Make the effort to spend time with the people you care about. Mostly, take time for yourselves. Easier said than done, I know. Between work, kids, laundry, and everything else on the list…but if you make yourself a priority, you and everybody around you will reap the benefits.

“Our lives are not determined by what happens to us but by how we react to what happens, not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes. It is a catalyst, a spark that creates extraordinary results.”   –Anon

A Struggling Writer…

Working on Revisions

Working on Revisions

On most days I think of myself as a writer who writes. I’m not often afflicted with writer’s block necessarily, but I do get stumped every now and then. Sometimes, when the words don’t flow so easily, I do what any perfectly normal person, or at least writer, would do. I procrastinate. I cook, clean, read. I sweep the garage. I talk to the dog. I gaze out the window to see if I can spot a wild rabbit running by. I glance at facebook or myspace to see what’s new. I gaze at the wonderful clearance sales on Macy.com. And then I come to my hangout and write a blog and tattle on myself, hoping that a public scolding will be the kick in the butt I need to get through a tough spot. I’m writing my first romantic thriller and tough is putting it mildly. This is my ninth finished novel. Four hundred pages and counting. My sister and I read through the first draft together and we believe it has potential. I scribbled vague notes and now I have to make whole characters disappear. I have to dig in and create additional scenes with great dialogue where the characters meet to discuss how they’re going to find the killer. How the heck am I supposed to know? I don’t know any cops or killers or FBI men. But that’s okay. My first two books were medieval time travels. I’ve never time-traveled before and that wasn’t nearly as difficult to write as this crazy thriller! If I can travel back in time, I can write a thriller. Or can I? We’ll see. I’ll keep you posted! Right after I procrastinate a little longer to take a picture for this blog! :)

What are you reading?

Brittany Reading

Brittany Reading

Right now I am reading Night by Elie Wiesel. It’s a small book (120 pages) but it packs an emotional punch. Part of the blurb: “Elie Wiesel was a teenager when he and his family were taken from their home in 1944 to the Auschwitz concentration camp, and then to Buchenwald. Night is the terrifying record of Elie Wiesel’s memories of the death of his family, the death of his own innocence….”

The New York Times referred to Night as “a slim volume of terrifying power”

In the first thirty pages, Elie talks about his family being warned about the horrifying things that were happening, but nobody believed man could be that evil and they ignored the warnings until it was too late. That’s understandable. I still can’t believe that even one person could commit such horrible crimes against another human being.

On a lighter note, I recently read Candide by Voltaire, a crazy book that my 16 year old daughter enjoyed! Voltaire is clearly making fun of optimism. His characters are tested on every page. The story is meant to be a funny romp, I believe, but it didn’t hit my funny bone. I read that “Voltaire created Candide as an outlet to spread his social criticisms about religion and government.” The book was written in 1759.

Earlier in the year, again prodded by my youngest daughter, I read Twilight and New Moon by Stephanie Meyer. I really liked Twilight but had a tougher time with New Moon since Edward waited much too long to make an appearance. I have the third book sitting on the night table…waiting. We’ll see.

Other books I read this year are HIDE by Lisa Gardner. I’m a big fan and she did not disappoint. I really enjoyed The Killing Hour. I am also half way through Jordan Dane’s No One Left To Tell. I’ll keep you updated. So far, so good.

So, what are you reading!? Any good books to suggest?
